Board Setup

The Khmer Chessboard is a board of eight by eight squares with 32 playing pieces in total.  Each player starts with a force of 16 playing pieces consisting of eight Fishes (Trey), two Boats (Tuuk), two Horses (Ses), two Generals (Koul), one Queen (Neang) and one King (Sdaach/Ang).  The Fishes are set up on the third and sixth
ranks.  The Kings are placed crosswise, not opposite each other like the Western Chess.  The Queen is always to the right of the King regardless of whether the pieces are white or black.  Standing next to the Queen and the King are the Generals followed by the Horses and the Boats on  the ends.  Only one piece may occupy a square at any given time, and only the Horses can leap over other pieces. The King, Queen and General are essentially the same shape, a sort of pointed dome but different in sizes: Small for the Queen, Medium for the General and Large for the King.
